So where does that leave us? Well, if the Academy is smart, it should open the door for “Mad Max.”

“Brooklyn” is moving, but it’s more likely to win a trophy for lead Saoirse Ronan than Best Picture. Period lesbian drama “Carol” is sumptuous but slight, goes the criticism. “The Big Short” has an A-list cast and tackled an important topic, but it’s tonally off at times and stuffed with unlikable characters. The consensus seems to be that it’s beautifully shot, but a violent slog. Leo DiCaprio’s “The Revenant” looked like a sure thing a few months ago, but its chances tailed off once people actually saw it. In fact, none of the Oscar-bait movies seem to have broken from the pack, and we’re already in January.

The whole point was that pictures like “The Dark Knight” and “Wall-E” - mainstream, moneymaking movies that also happened to be artistic achievements - would no longer be overlooked.
